Crane Creek

Crane Creek Professional Review and Guide

"Delicate little stream with big, western ‘bows. Located just 25 miles southwest of Springfield, this jewel of a trout stream is as diminutive in size as its fish are hearty. Here you’ll find rainbows—pure strain McCloud River rainbows—first stocked in 1880, then allowed to go wild. And that’s what they’ve done; they thrive in the cold flows fed by springs and limestone sinks. Clear as proverbial glass, the water roils over a pebbly bottom, tufted here and there with patches of aquatic grasses that wave in the current.

The main section of fishable waters—two miles in the Wire Road Conservation area north and west of the little hamlet of Crane—is largely protected by a brushy canopy of box elder and sycamore. That helps keep the waters cool even on those scorching 100 degrees F days of mid-summer. Vegetation overhangs cut banks, providing additional shelter, and the riffles are just aggressive enough to oxygenate the water. Species: McCloud Strain rainbow. Angling methods: spin, and fly-fishing."
