Huckleberry Ridge State Forest

Huckleberry Ridge State Forest Professional Review and Guide

"Huckleberry Ridge State Forest is a network of approximately 14 miles of trail. The network will take you over single-track, rough double-track, and narrow gravel roads. The single-track is the toughest riding in the forest and is only recommended for experts.

The most difficult of the single-track follows a horse trail, part of which is overgrown and lost. The double-track and gravel trails are less difficult and can be easily ridden by beginners, but there will be several long climbs. Scenic vistas will reward you for the ascents to ridges in this forest. These trails are located 40 miles southwest of Joplin."

Very rigorous terrain. Expect steep climbs and portages. Beautiful scenery and foliage that is best enjoyed in the Spring and Fall. This forest is also good for primitive camping and hiking. I would suggest spending the day or camping over night to explore the entire trail and forest. It's also very private, mostly limited to a few trail riders on horseback during the day. A buddy and I rode the trail on a cool April afternoon. After the ride we put up our bikes and went for a hike. Great place for a weekend outing.
My fiancee and I took a trip to S. MO to check this ride out. If you are in the area it is ok, but don't bother driving more than an hour to get to it...(We drove about 4) I suspect there are better trails around the springfield area....It didn't seem as if many folks had been on the single track, aside from horses. Much of the steep trails on the south side of the road were washed out, downed tree's and pretty tough to ride...(impossible to climb).we did about 2 miles on the north side, which was better, but it got dark and we had to leave..... a float trip in a canoe or raft at one of the many river outfitters in Pineville...did that on Sunday and it was a blast....
