St Joe State Park

St. Joe State Park Professional Review and Guide

"While some of the trails in the network at St. Joe are difficult for beginners, most of the maintained trails can be ridden by novices. The unofficial trails that traverse the park are more technical, and better suited to experienced riders who enjoy testing their bike handling skills.

The trails include an 11-mile paved bike path for those who prefer an easy ride, very rugged and unmarked motorcycle trails, and a set of marked equestrian trails. These trails are located 5 miles west of Farmington."

More St. Joe State Park Professional Reviews and Guides

"St. Joe State Park, with an 11-mile paved loop trail, is the place to go if you like easy walking without the noise of city streets. It’s also good for rugged hiking—the 6.5-mile Pine Ridge Loop on the park’s equestrian trail system has enough rocky terrain to challenge the toughest outdoors enthusiast."

I wanted to do an 8 to 10 mile trail run, so I chose the combination of the "red" and the "yellow" trails. On the positive side, the trail maps were quite good, and available at the trailheads for free. On the negative side, these trails were not maintained at all. The worst was the "red" trail -- I had to turn around and go back to the trailhead, because the trail was too overgrown by briar patches. This was a great disappointment, I had traveled to SE Missouri to specifically run that trail. I do not recommend it until they start to maintain it again.

This is a great place for biking. Some of the trails are fairly challenging. There are also many paved roads and trails to ride on. you just have to watch out for the offroading trucks.
