Prairie Country: Niawathe to Prairie State Park, MO Professional Review and Guide

"A 42-mile drive beginning 8 miles north of Lockwood on Missouri Highway 97, traveling west through prairie landscapes and the towns of Lamar and Liberal, and ending at Prairie State Park. This drive crosses prairie country on the western edge of the Ozarks’ Springfield Plateau and enters a region called the Osage Plains. This allows for a visit to Prairie State Park, which was created to reclaim lost prairie heritage through interpretive exhibits and trails and is situated in the heart of a prairie.

The Osage Plains region is distinguished from the Springfield Plateau by its bedrock of sandstone and shale of older, Pennsylvanian age, while the Springfield Plateau is composed of limestone and chert rocks of Mississippian age. Special attractions: Niawathe Prairie Natural Area, Harry S Truman State Historic Site, and Prairie State Park; prairie wildflowers and wildlife, and hiking."
