1000 Steps Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Located in the eastern Ozarks, the 1,875-acre Washington State Park is rich in both natural and cultural history. Several Native American rock carvings, or petroglyphs, have been found within the park, and unlike many of the rock carvings found in this part of the country, they have largely escaped vandalism. Visitors hoping to see these artifacts can locate them just behind the visitor center or at the park’s main interpretive site, which is accessible both by vehicle and foot.

These petroglyphs, the largest grouping found in Missouri to date, were created by the Middle Mississippi culture around AD 1000 and give clues to the beliefs and lives of the people living here during that time. Due to the number and exceptional quality of the carvings, these sites have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and are protected under the National Historic Preservation Act."

"The 1000 Steps Trail, in historic Washington State Park, climbs one of the t owering dolomite bluffs located in the park. The strenuous trek takes hikers to the top of the bluff to a lookout area with views of the Big River and camping area. The trail contin- ues on to pass some of the struc tures built by an African-American company of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s." Read more
