Meramec Hills: St. James to Onondaga Cave, MO Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"A 44-mile drive that begins at St. James and winds through the scenic wooded hills of the Meramec River valley to Onondaga Cave State Park. This drive begins on the eastern edge of the narrow plateau that separates the Gasconade River drainage (15 miles to the west) from the Meramec River hills (just to the east). Small patches of prairie once grew on this more level, open plateau but the grasses quickly gave way to forest on the steep hills leading down to the Meramec River, a drop of about 300 feet in elevation. Very little erosion occurs in these densely wooded hills, resulting in clear-flowing streams and springs.
Special attractions: St. James, Maramec Spring Park, Meramec River, Route 66, Onondaga Cave State Park, and Vilander Bluff and Spring’s End natural areas; wineries, canoeing, hiking, auto tour, camping, trout fishing, and hunting. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
