"The first acres of St. Francois State Park were purchased in 1964 in a community effort to preserve the history and beauty of the area. The park was ultimately taken over by Missouri State Parks and has been a popular destination for St. Louis–area residents ever since. The 2,101-acre Coonville Creek Wild Area provided hideouts during the Civil War as well as during Prohibition. Today the park covers 2,735 acres total and still offers a retreat for visitors looking to get away from the city. Hiking, camping, boating, fishing, and wading are some of the most popular recreational opportunities in the park. The 110 campsites offer ample space to pitch a tent, take a shower, and even do some laundry. Nearly 18 miles of hiking trails provide plenty of space to get away from the crowds and enjoy nature." Hiked the Mooner's Hollow trail yesterday 12 July 2018 by myself. Had a great time. Had sprayed my clothes the night before with Tick and chigger prevention and carried some OFF Bug Spray which I reapplied several times while on the trail. Had no ticks whatsoever and very few nats or mosquitos. The trail was pretty with limestone formations close to teh trail on one side and the creek on the other side. If you have that nerdy hobby like me who loves to search for fossils and rocks you would love this hike. There are many quartz crystals of various types along with many broken and abundant crystal geodes. Ran across nearly a dozen active springs and creeks not to mention the diverse woods and vegetation the trail had to offer.
