"Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park is an excellent destination almost any time of year, but it is particularly popular during the hot summer months, when the cool waters of the Black River and the unique rock formations known as shut-ins combine to form the perfect swimming hole. A shut-in is a narrow channel formed by especially hard, erosion-resistant igneous rock. The channels “shut in” the water, forming pools from a few inches to dozens of feet deep, which offer a refreshing retreat during the hot and humid days common to Missouri. In addition to the shut-ins, the area offers hikers, horseback riders, and nature lovers plenty of acres to enjoy the amazing beauty of the Ozarks." Read more
