Klondike Park

Klondike Park Professional Review and Guide

"Klondike Park opened in 2004 on the site of the old Klondike Quarry. The quarry first opened in 1898, when the Tavern Rock Sand Company began crushing the park’s sandstone to extract silica for making glass. After the quarry closed in 1983, nothing was done with the land for nearly 20 years, allowing this 250-acre work-scarred landscape to return to its natural beauty.

Meramec’s riverside campground is at the east end of the developed part of the park. The first 180 sites at Meramec are in a large grassy field next to the river. Sites 1–20 are next to the Meramec, but they’re full-hookup sites. Most of campsites 21–74 are electric sites that are close together. Sites 75–111 are basic sites at the back of the campground and are the best spaced and most quiet camping spots in the main campground."

Great campgrounds! There is a crushed granite pad for setting up your tent as well as a picnic table and fire ring. The bathrooms are clean pit toilets. The road is gravel to get to the sites, but is a quick drive. Getting into town for more supplies only takes 5 minutes or so. You are also only a 100 yards from the Missouri high point trail and a great waterfall trail.

There was a problem w/ the water while I was there, so you couldn't drink from the tap. Since I didn't bring enough drinking water with me, I had to cut my trip short. The trails are like no other in Missouri. I felt like I was out in Colorado. The granite is beautiful! This is one I will do again.

Great for practicing those longer backpacking trips. Great overlook area. Foggy in the early spring. And if you need supplies, bring them with you, the town is a little sparce! Nice trails, rugged and a lot of up-down.
