Sand Dunes State Forest

Sand Dunes State Forest Professional Review and Guide

"A looping trail, through a pine forest and a nearby oak-savanna prairie. To the north of this state forest lies the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, which is 30,000 acres of wetlands, sloughs, and oak groves.

To the south lies Uncas Dunes Scientific and Natural Area, a place noted for its sand dune habitat and a rare butterfly called the uncas skipper, which lives in only two places in Minnesota. (The caterpillar feeds off the hairy grama in spring and the adults go after the hairy puccoon in June.) This hike is surrounded by wilderness habitat wild enough for even several bald eagles to nest. Special attractions: Uncas Dunes SNA and beach."

Beautiful sunny day, soft rolling hills. The ice was just off the lake and the wildflowers just starting to peek out from under the pine needles. It was pretty quiet, not too many people out walking today.
