Gateway State Trail

Gateway State Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The country setting is the charm of the northern half of the Gateway State Trail, which begins in the residential section of Lake Phalen in St. Paul. The hike ends just north of Stillwater at Pine Point Regional Park.

The “city” half of this 18.3-mile-long trail joins up with other St. Paul trail systems. It’s not until you get past the swarm of traffic at the intersection of I-694 and MN 36 in the suburbs east of St. Paul that you really get to see the true character of this trail."

I hiked this trail with my 9 year old daughter in the late winter. It was muddy, but beautiful. We went back in the summer and it was just beautiful. There are some parts of the trail that you need to exert yourself a bit, but you can easily avoid that if this is a problem. Definitely get out of the car. It's beautiful woodland, and you can never truly experience that from a car. So even if you just sit, turn the car off, and listen, you will be grateful.
