Thompson County Park, Thompson Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Thompson County Park Trail cuts several paths through this tiny chunk of Big Woods tucked between the freeway and houses on Saint Paul’s south side. When you enter the park, the impression is one of a country wayside next to a very small lake. For the most part, that’s exactly right.

The hiking trail begins at the parking lot and follows the paved pathway around the front of the information center. The path heads down to the small, pondlike Thompson Lake. Turn right at the intersection and follow the path, which is paved around the developed half of the lake. Just after a footbridge over the creek at the lake’s northern end, the now-unpaved path continues around the lake and is flanked by sumacs on the shore side and a buffer zone of grasses between the park and the adjoining neighborhood on the right."
