Old Mill State Park

Old Mill State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A fascinating history surrounding the preserved mills in Old Mill State Park makes this hike a must for history buffs. Nature lovers will enjoy it as well, for a variety of wildlife including moose frequent the area. In addition, the at terrain allows spectacular views of northern lights. The trail takes you into the open prairie, through the riverine forest along the Middle River, across the river on a footbridge where the trail leads to a small swimming lake, and, at the north end of the park, to the old mills.

The park is a combination of prairie, oak savanna, riverine forest, and Agassiz beach ridges created by the glacial lake that once covered much of northwestern Minnesota. Several scenic overlooks along the way will give you a good view of the river and the landscape’s vast open area."

July is a great month for watching wild life as you walk along this trail! Butterflies were flying all around us as we passed through the prairie parts of this trail! Chipmunks and ground squirrels were running all over the wooded parts of the trails. Plus we picked wild raspberries as we walked. The Hiking Club trail was a 1.4 mile loop that was very enjoyable!
