Trout Valley Unit, RJ Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest

Trout Valley Unit, R.J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest Professional Review and Guide

"A multi-use trail on two arms of a plateau, with some fine views of the Mississippi backwaters to the east, and west to the whitewater bottoms. The Trout Valley unit of Dorer State Forest consists of 2,375 acres centered on a large plateau, bordered nearly on all sides by creeks and rivers. Along the unit’s southern ravine, the spring-fed Trout Valley Creek begins its short journey to the Whitewater River to the north. Bordering on the west and north sides of this unit, you have the wilderness of Whitewater Wildlife Area with 27,000 acres, and a small section of the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, which in total spans 200,000 acres through four states.

While this forest unit lacks the pristine nature of its neighbors, it does offer overlooks of each river. The trail for the most part follows the edge of this serrated bluff around its northern section, dropping down into a valley only on the east side. The path travels through forest mixed with oak, hickory, aspen, birch, and black walnut on steeply sided slopes, while flat plateau tops are mostly farm land. Special attractions: Demonstration lot overlooks, and Trout Creek."
