Superior Hiking Trail: Oberg Mountain, Moose Mountain, and Lutsen Professional Review and Guide
"This is a pleasant, scenic walk, especially on a beautiful September day. For us, other than Sammy and the hornets, the best part of this walk was the long walk along the rocky Moose Mountain ridge, views and lunch at Gondola Hill, the lovely maple forest, the 3M gabbro, and the Poplar River. “Smoking” fireweed, golden tamaracks, and oodles of broad wing hawks were an added plus. This is one of the oldest sections of the Superior Hiking Trail.
Oberg Mountain, at 1555 feet elevation, is much like Leveaux Mountain: they are both composed of the same kind of rock and both form cuestas. This gives these two mountains, along with Moose Mountain, a profile that looks like teeth on a wood saw. For this reason they are referred to as the Sawtooth Mountains. The rock these cuestas are composed of is called the Star Wars Porphyry because the large plagioclase feldspar crystals in it have shapes suggestive of the space ships seen in the Star Wars movies. The percentage of large feldspar crystals making up this igneous intrusive rock increases dramatically between the lower and upper parts of Oberg Mountain."
