Superior Hiking Trail: Carlton Peak Professional Review and Guide
"Wow, what a great, walk! Carlton Peak and Ted Tofte overlook (be here at the height of fall color and you have the best viewing seat on the entire hiking trail) are both great, high places with spectacular views; either would serve as a perfect lunch spot. The Temperance River with its rocks, waterfalls, gorges, and delta is an extra bonus as are all the wetland plants. A short, must-do walk.
If you are interested in a drink don’t stop at the Temperance River because it is purported to be one of the few North Shore streams without a bar. The lack of a gravel bar at its mouth is the reason given for the river’s name, which dates back to 1864. However, Judy and I walked down to the river’s mouth and there on the east side of the river is a lovely gravel bar! It was not a mirage so was there no bar there in 1864, or is the rivers name but a figment of someone’s teetotaler imagination? It’s a gorgeous afternoon at the wayside; a gentle breeze wafts in from the lake, the sun is high and bright, and the sound of the rushing water not only gives us a good feeling, but draws us to it like bears to honey."
