Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Professional Review and Guide

"Calling the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) a campground is like referring to the Grand Canyon as a pothole. The BWCAW stretches more than a million acres from Ely on the west to Grand Marais on the east, contained within the Superior National Forest. There are more than 2,500 lakes within the BWCAW and 2,000 campsites. This is a paddler’s paradise, as only a handful of the lakes allow any kind of motorized craft, and there are more than 1,200 miles of canoe routes.

The prohibition against motors throughout most of the BWCAW (somewhat controversial to local residents) give this area one of the most remote nature accesses in the state, where you can paddle or hike for miles and see nothing but forest vegetation and wild animals. As such, wildlife viewing and bird watching can be extraordinary. There are some more- developed campsites with flush toilets and showers, but many of the sites are very rustic."
