Superior Hiking Trail: Twin Lakes Loop Professional Review and Guide
"“A very nice walk,” Judy says. “I wonder how many people get to visit Elam’s Knob and see the Lombardy pines, blow down, as well as beautiful Bean and Bear lakes. A easy walk for those not inclined to do the long walk from Silver Bay to Tettegouche.” It’s clear, sunny, and warm for our second hike of 2005. Both Sammy and Charlie are keen to be out and about, and this summer-like April weather can last all the way into November as far as I’m concerned.
We are at the north end of the parking lot for the Silver Bay Visitor’s/Historical Center. This is the start of the Twin Lakes loop trail, which is an official spur trail to the Superior Hiking Trail. This trail, which winds its way up to Bean and Bear Lakes, was laid out and built largely by Toivo Savonen of Silver Bay. He was one of the laid off miners at the then Reserve Mining Company (now Northshore Mining) who were hired to help build the Superior Hiking Trail."
