Superior Hiking Trail: Kennedy Cliff and Sawmill Dome Professional Review and Guide
"Yet another great walk on a superb foot path. Kennedy Cliffs and the Wolf Lake overlook, pink anorthosite, Crack In The Rock, Sawmill Dome, old maple forests (beautiful fall color), Great Cliff, Superior View and Tortured Basalt, as well as the anorthosite steps are all, in their unique way, worth long extra looks! The small parking lot off Highway 1 IS hard to find. Judy and I missed it the first time, but creeping along the highway like army worms searching for birch trees, we are successful on the second attempt. I think part of the problem is not paying attention (us); the other part is that we didn’t expect it to be so close to Highway 61.
As it turns out the army worms beat us here. Leaves have been eaten on a few of the trees, but the damage is not too bad considering the havoc these voracious caterpillars caused two years ago. I remember highways oily black and slick as ice from the thousands of tire-flattened bodies, not to mention worm-covered houses and cabins. Worse was hiking through the woods when they were hatching out or on the move to a new food source. They descended from trees on long silk threads filling the forest with a constant pitter-patter that sounded like raindrops on dry leaves as they fell the final few feet to the ground."
