South Saint Paul Riverfront Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"If you’re into trains, barges, and big rivers, this is the trail for you. There’s not a lot of glamour in this paved path, which follows the shoreline of the Mississippi just south of downtown Saint Paul. The tree-lined east bank gives the illusion that expansive forests lie beyond the waters—not so the west bank, which is the industrial side of the river. The trail runs parallel to an extensive railroad yard with multiple tracks, idling locomotives, and a repository of boxcars. No wooded wonderland, it’s a representation of the commercial lifeblood of this magnificent river.
Besides the natural scenery, you can’t help but appreciate the commerce created on the river. With that in mind, this trail is a good example of South Saint Paul’s efforts to provide modern, clean, and well-laid-out parks and waysides. This trail starts at Simon’s Ravine, about a mile south from the heart of downtown."
