Lake Nokomis

Lake Nokomis Professional Review and Guide

"Of all the lakes in the Grand Rounds loop, my favorite is Lake Nokomis. It’s the lake I grew up around, and the one in which I paddled my canoes and kayaks and fished with my greatgrandfather from England. We always told people we “lived near Lake Nokomis.” I’ve walked around this lake during a winter storm at -30º and in sweltering 100º summer heat."

Spent three and a half hours trekking through the NE corner of this park. Encountered deer, grouse, loons, sparrows and some nice views of what I would call prairie meadow/marshland .....my daughter likened the setting to the hobbits' Shire with its lush green grasses and low rolling hills....I heartily agreed! A very welcome beginner hiking park. Wide trails, no steep elevation changes and MILES of trails to train those legs with relatively little risk of injury makes this an outstanding park to hone your backpacking skills.......all within 20-30 minutes of downtown Minneapolis. Only four stars because, at least in the NE corner we trekked, there were no real WOW moments of stunning beauty as one would see along the north shore or in other national parks. But hey we didn't have to drive 10 hours round trip or fly across country either to really enjoy a quiet beautiful secluded hike 25 minutes from home and I like that!
