Red Wing to Frontenac Loop

Red Wing to Frontenac Loop Professional Review and Guide

"Frontenac State Park, which occupies the site of the abandoned river town of Frontenac, has a long, rich history. Archaeological research estimates that the first human beings lived in the area from 400 B.C. to A.D. 300. The first Europeans reached the area in 1680, with the first settlement built in 1727. As steamboat traffic steadily increased through the 1800s, Frontenac became one of the most popular summer vacation resorts in the country.

Human influence aside, the park remains an excellent place to watch bird migration, with bald and golden eagles common visitors during winter. Timber rattlesnakes also live in the bluffs of the park, which is one of the only places in Minnesota with habitat suitable for them."
