Root River South Branch from Preston to Whalan

Root River: South Branch from Preston to Whalan Professional Review and Guide

"A swift trout stream with easy rapids, the South Branch makes a good one-day canoe trip when the water is fairly high. Clear and riffling, it cuts through a deep, wooded valley.

At times the view is intimate and cloistered, hemmed in by a dense forest of hardwoods. Occasionally the trees give way to open fields and views of lowering hills and limestone cliffs. Watch for deadfalls blocking the channel."

Afternoon trip of about 4 leisurely hours with a lot of drifting and relaxing in the first half. Started at the 'Old Barn Resort' rather than Preston. There's a launch point there that is also used by the local vendors who rent kayaks, canoes and tubes. This is a popular stretch and although I wouldn't call it 'crowded'... other paddlers, primarily in canoes, came along regularly. The river is clear and shallow with occasional small rapids. You have to watch out for the randomly placed large rocks also. There weren't too many submerged trees but the large rocks were an ever present impact possibility. The river has a very nice flow until a mile or two upstream from Lanesboro. Then it gets deeper and slows to an almost imperceptible crawl. The take-out is just above the dam, on the right side, at the city campground and is only marked by a small sign placed 100 feet upriver. One thing to note... we saw many, many trout while we were here... some of them were easily 10 - 12 inches. Bring a pole!
