Aitkin / McGregor, Mille Lacs, and Vicinity Professional Review and Guide

"Aitkin has been the scene of commerce for hundreds of years. A fur post on Cedar Lake, just west of the present city, was built by the British in the mid-1700s. The post sat on the main Ojibway route to the Mississippi River.

Key birds: Common Loon (fall), Ring-necked Duck, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Yellow Rail, Great Gray Owl, Snowy and Northern Hawk-Owls (winter), Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Gray Jay, Black-billed Magpie, Boreal Chickadee, Sedge Wren, Connecticut and Mourning Warblers, Nelson’s Sharp-tailed and Le Conte’s Sparrows. Don’t miss: Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge, McGregor Marsh. This eTrail provides information on birding strategies for this location, birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful maps."
