Mille Lacs Kathio State Park Professional Review and Guide
"Southern edge of Mille Lacs Lake. A short hike that goes up to an observation tower overlooking Mille Lacs Lake and the surrounding forests. There are also many more miles of rolling trails though the dense forest. Special attractions: Big overlook of Mille Lacs Lake and surrounding forest, a heron rookery, and several historical sites.
Along the shores of the big Mille Lacs Lake people have fished, harvested wild rice, and hunted in the surrounding forests for more than 4,000 years. Archeologists have identified copper tools and pottery from digs conducted near the interpretive center. Some of the people who inhabited this region include the Dakota, Objiwe, and Europeans, who first explored the region in the 1680s and were present much later, in the 1850s, during the height of the logging boom."
