Mille Lacs Kathio State Park

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park Professional Review and Guide

"Southern edge of Mille Lacs Lake. A short hike that goes up to an observation tower overlooking Mille Lacs Lake and the surrounding forests. There are also many more miles of rolling trails though the dense forest. Special attractions: Big overlook of Mille Lacs Lake and surrounding forest, a heron rookery, and several historical sites.

Along the shores of the big Mille Lacs Lake people have fished, harvested wild rice, and hunted in the surrounding forests for more than 4,000 years. Archeologists have identified copper tools and pottery from digs conducted near the interpretive center. Some of the people who inhabited this region include the Dakota, Objiwe, and Europeans, who first explored the region in the 1680s and were present much later, in the 1850s, during the height of the logging boom."

There are lots of paths here to try out. One of the most used is the one which ends with a fire tower. When you climb to the top, the view is magnificent. My 12 year old daughter loved it, her height averse mother went up and down much more slowly. The other trails allow views of woodland, meadows and lakes.

NOt really a trail, but a short, 1/4 mile path. This is worth it though, as when you get to the top, you are above the tree line and can see all the way to the other side of Mille Lacs. I caught a BEAUTIFUL sunset there last weekend.
