Terrace Oaks Park

Terrace Oaks Park Professional Review and Guide

"Short and fast, this entry- to intermediate-level trail winds through oak forest and wetland, with tight turns and a few punchy climbs. Ride a quick, shakedown cruise on the 2.5-mile loop, or scorch multiple racetrack laps to test your best times."

"Ride from the trailhead past hockey rink and into the woods. Do not ride on the hiking trail. A couple of short, steep climbs greet you almost immediately, then the trail deposits you onto some tight, twisting turns. Try to keep your bar ends and hands from shaving the bark off passing trees.

A fun, challenging ride in remote setting within the city and a great place to test your bike handling skills.

Tread: Entire loop is mix of gravel and dirt singletrack."

"This short trail is another favorite in these parts. Designed by local resident Gary Sjoquist, a tireless mountain bike advocate with a keen eye, Terrace Oaks is a gem in the heart of suburbia. This path shares park space with hikers, and each group has its own designated trail. The mountain bike portion is gnarly, hard-packed singletrack with loads of tight switchback turns through thick woods. Encroaching trees present steady challenges, grazing your handlebars every chance they get.

Toward the end of the loop are a couple of long, steep downhills on wider gravel trail that quickly deliver you back at the start. A short detour to a more technical section is available on the back half of the main loop. As its name implies, Terrace Oaks is loaded with mature oaks, along with maple and aspen and a barrage of low-lying shrubbery. It’s hard to believe you’re surrounded by urban sprawl as you make your way through the park. We are fortunate to have a refuge like this so close to home. Tread: Entire loop is mix of gravel and dirt singletrack."

Terrace is a great little trail for all abilities. It is one of the few trails I can think of that I thoroughly enjoy as an expert and would take a first timer out to ride. The majority of the trail consists of twisty, non-technical singletrack through the woods. There are a few good climbs followed by some fast and fun descents. The greatest feature, however, is an optional "expert" loop which occurs near the end of the trail. If someone is much slower than you, they will have a chance to catch up while the faster rider does the expert loop. This is a wonderful trail, mostly hardpack, and a blast for all.
