Fort Snelling State Park Snelling Lake and Pike Island Trails

Fort Snelling State Park: Snelling Lake and Pike Island Trails Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The first part of this hike explores Pike Island and follows a hiker-only trail system that runs along the perimeter of the island. Whether you go clockwise or counterclockwise around the loop, you will intersect two cross trails that offer the option of shortening the hike.

It’s a short jaunt from the visitor-center parking area to the trailhead on Pike Island. A 0.2-mile spur from the lot cuts through a sampling of the type of growth you will experience throughout this hike. This is river bottomland—a jumble of understory composed mostly of silver maples, some ashes, and a few stately cottonwoods, veterans of many floods."
