Rice River

Rice River Professional Review and Guide

"A lazy stream with several small lakes along its course, the Rice tells a tale of the big-pine logging that once took place in this region.

From a cluster of lakes in Chippewa National Forest, the Rice River winds slowly northward to join the Big Fork River. Launch your canoe at Clubhouse Lake (river mile 18.0) and follow the waterway through Mikes Lake to the junction of East and Copenhagen Lakes (river mile 17.0). You can take an interesting side trip by turning east (right) into East Lake to see a grove of pines more than 200 years old. Before the heyday of big-pine logging in this area during the late 1800s, large groves such as these spread across much of northern Minnesota."
