    Blue Mounds State Park

Blue Mounds State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The centerpiece of this park is the large rock outcrop known as the Blue Mound. At the park’s southern end is a 1,250-foot-long line of rocks aligned in an east- ]west direction. No one knows who built it or why, but one thing that is known is that on the first day of spring and fall, the sunrise and sunset line up with the stones.

There are 13 miles of hiking trails that explore the Mound and the extensive prairie lands, taking hikers near the area where a herd of bison lives. The hiking trails are maintained in winter. There’s a historic home at the southern end of the park, and some WPA structures as well. The primary campground here (the one open to RVs) has sites that are pretty close together, while the cart- in sites are more remote and private. Pets are allowed."
