I have made taken this trail many times of the year while staying at the lovely rustic Cascade Lodge. If anyone else loves this trail and could give me information on trails as wonderful please do!

This is a beautiful trail. I hiked it with my 13 yr. old daughter. She loved the rocks and the cascading river, (liking to get a little to close for my taste). There are amazing river views as the trail takes you through Minnesota's north woods. Lots of nearby camping or resorts, depending on your taste.

The hike along the river is well worth the effort it took. Note that when starting on the west side the 96 stairs is just for sightseers, but is part of the trail. The first one and a half miles are fairly flat and follow the river bank. There are several un-marked campsites along this section, small but nice. No outhouses though. The hidden falls side trail was dry, no falls. The rise in elevation is as in the description above, steep and hard going, especially for my 14 yr old daughter, although she made it without to much trouble. One group we saw waded the river to the trail back on the other side, saving about six or seven miles. The two campsites on the map are hilly and a ways from a water source. The hike through the forest area seems to take longer than it should from looking at the map. Just before hwy 45 is spectacular view of a long series of falls on a side river flowing into the Cascade. The hike back along the east side offers more great views of the river. More of the river can be seen from this side.
