Wolsfeld Woods Scientific Natural Area SNA

Wolsfeld Woods Scientific Natural Area (SNA) Professional Review and Guide

"A trail through a dense forest with lots of big trees, featuring the largest sugar maples in the state and other old-growth trees. Hike here in the spring, before the trees shade out the carpet of ephermal, blooming wildflowers; hike here in the summer to walk in the cool shade of the leaves; and hike in the fall to see the changing colors.

Wolsfeld Woods is a premier example (and one of the last remnants) of the Big Woods; its old-growth trees are the highlight of this hike. The trails loop through some of the biggest sugar maples in the state and past two-hundred-year-old red oak, basswood, butternut, and ironwood trees."

This trail takes you through a very dense forest and was infested with mosquitioes at the time we went. It also takes you next to a gorgeous lake, but beware, the trail branches off in many areas and gives you too many options and does not have sufficient signs to point you in the right direction. It is beautiful but confusing.
