Kilen Woods State Park

Kilen Woods State Park Professional Review and Guide

"A hike from the oak grove down the 150-foot valley of the Des Moines River and back up to a rolling prairie. With only 200 acres, Kilen Woods is a small park, though the park actually feels much bigger and more remote than one might imagine. By taking a short hike around the park, you can find lowland forest along the river, some unique prairies (where the endangered prairie bush clover resides), and a peaceful oak savanna in the rolling hills.

No doubt the deep 150-foot Des Moines River valley and a couple of tucked away ravines help give a sense of remoteness to this heavily farmed region. (The river valley resulted, not from the slow moving present day Des Moines, but from the draining of the Des Moines ice lobe during the Wisconsin glaciation.) Special attractions: Prairie Bush Clover SNA and Dinosaur Ridge overlook."
