Saint Croix State Forest

Saint Croix State Forest Professional Review and Guide

"East of Hinckley; just north of Saint Croix State Park, this is a rugged horse/hiking trail that goes up and down the steep valley sides of the Lower Tamarack River.

The loop around Tamarack River is a multi-use trail, with horseback riders using it more often than hikers. The forest offers access to the Gandy Dancer Trail, which is a trail-to-rail route linking Wisconsin and Minnesota, catering to ATVers and mountain bikers. The Saint Croix State Forest’s main trail goes around the Lower Tamarack River in its rugged valley. The one advantage the horseback riders have over hikers on this route is the river crossing. If on foot, crossing is probably better in late summer with the lower river level and the cool refreshing water in the heat of day.

Special attractions: Overlooks of the river and wildlife."
