Vermillion River-Old Mill Park to CR 68

Vermillion River-Old Mill Park to CR 68 Professional Review and Guide

"The final miles of the Vermillion River wind slowly over the flood plain of the Mississippi. The backwaters are interesting to explore, but you may have to pull around several log-jams.

And now for something completely different. The Vermillion as farmland river and difficult whitewater run are history. The river now wanders over the floodplain of the Mississippi. A bottomland forest of silver maple, elm, and ash overhang the river. Herons and egrets wade the shallows. Kingfishers are poised on branches overhanging the water. Woodpeckers find nesting cavities in dead trees. Common mammals in this environment include white-tailed deer, raccoons, and red foxes. In spring and fall, look for a variety of migrating waterfowl in the backwaters."
