Platte River

Platte River Professional Review and Guide

"The Platte, for much of its length a meandering farmland stream, cuts through hills and woods in its last few miles. Paddling and fishing are best from Royalton to the Mississippi River.

Put in at the boat launch and portage the low dam at the outlet of Rice Lake. The Platte meanders slowly through the marshes of the Crane Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. In spring and early fall, look for sandhill cranes. More than 30 pairs have been nesting in the area of Rice, Skunk, and Mud Lakes. In autumn, up to 400 cranes may gather."
