Suomi Hills Trails (North Loop) Professional Review and Guide
"Just getting to Suomi Hills is fun. The other name for the access route is the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway, and it is a well-deserved moniker. The picturesque drive in gets you primed for one of the prettiest rides in the forest, and the rolling terrain is more than enough to give your legs a workout. The tread changes offer a medley of grass, dirt, and rocks to put many of your riding skills to good use. There are numerous small lakes on the ride, surrounded by thick stands of maple, basswood, aspen, and birch, with scattered pine thrown in.
You’re almost sure to see loons and beaver on the lakes, and you may also have some company in the form of coyotes, deer, black bear, or bald eagles. Spruce Island Lake is one highlight of this ride, and there is a cozy little point just off the trail, which is a great spot to take a breather or have a snack. Several secluded backcountry campsites offer other options for adventure. Come in the fall and you’ll find it hard to leave. Tread: Mix of grass, rock, and dirt singletrack."
