Mississippi River Grand Rapids to Brainerd

Mississippi River: Grand Rapids to Brainerd Professional Review and Guide

"This winding woodland stream offers plenty of opportunities for long-distance paddling and overnight camping. This stretch of river is unspectacular, but it is undeveloped and pretty and makes and excellent route for a camping trip of several days. You'll encounter a few stretches of fast water and rocks, but for the most part, this stretch is placid. There are no dams to block the route until the city of Brainerd.

The paddling: Below Grand Rapids, the Mississippi continues a winding course through woods, marsh, and some pastureland. Within a few miles, the Prairie River joins from the north, about doubling the flow of water. This stretch of river is unspectacular, but it is undeveloped and pretty and makes an excellent route for a camping trip of several days. You’ll encounter a few stretches of fast water and rocks, but for the most part, this stretch is placid."
