Lakes of Grand Rapids Professional Review and Guide

"As beautiful as the thick and evergreen forest around Grand Rapids is today, you have to wonder what it was like several generations ago when a virgin forest of 150-foot-tall white pine covered the region. Visitors can still see the occasional crown of one of these majestic specimens towering above the second-and third-growth forest, a lonely remnant of the vast carpet that once was.

The huge trees provided incredible amounts of timber, and the massive stands of red and white pine-probably more trees than most lumberjacks had ever seen-led to the logging version of a gold rush. Besides being in the middle of the massive northern forests, Grand Rapids also sits among two other significant geographic landmarks: The town perches along the upper reaches of the Mississippi River, at the point past which steamboats could not travel, and lies at the western edge of the Mesabi Iron Range. It's also the birthplace of Judy Garland."
