Route of the Voyageurs

Route of the Voyageurs Professional Review and Guide

"Grand Portage, the "Great Carrying Place," played an important role in the history of this region. Used for many years by the Cree and Ojibwa, who lived in the area, the Grand Portage provided an overland route from the more tranquil waters of the upper Pigeon River to Lake Superior.

The tribes used this portage to avoid the rapids and waterfalls on the lower river and to reach the quiet waters that allowed them to canoe deep into the heart of the wilderness forming the border between the United States and Canada. Today this massive network of lakes comprises the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Quetico Provincial Park."
