Superior Hiking Trail Woods Creek, Kimball Creek, and the Kadunce River

Superior Hiking Trail: Woods Creek, Kimball Creek, and the Kadunce River Professional Review and Guide

"For us the highlight of this hike was certainly the “magic corner” and “Sound of Music” field, followed by “Half-Way Rock,” Kimball Creek Rhyolite, white oaks, large aspen, black spruce, Easter Egg Lava, Canyon Lands carved by the Kadunce River, and the river itself. For today’s hike we have to park on the roadside because the parking lot is full of road construction equipment. In the dense morning fog the power shovel and front-end loader look like prehistoric monsters, jaws agape, waiting silently for something solid to wander past.

The fog not only gives the machines an imaginary, monster-like form, but it also makes an interesting carpet of moving white that is speckled with the occasional yellow, green, or red of the nearby trees. The drive down from Nor’Wester Lodge on the Gunflint Trail was kind of scary as dense fog patches steamed up the front and side windows and, once solidly coated, we drove into bright sunshine that led to a few seconds of total blindness. During those moments I imagined a real monster, a large bull moose, stepping out from the close-by woods."
