Superior Hiking Trail: Clear Cut, Tom’s Road, and the Busy Beaver Professional Review and Guide
"I found Tom’s Road fascinating with the white pines, active beaver, Rove Formation, and the monzonite; I also liked the rock monster and the beaver runways along Carlson Creek. Judy thinks Carlson Pond and Creek with their variety of plants along with enterprising beaver were the walk highlights. Neither of us would vote for the clear cut or active logging area.
Snow in the first week of October! Of course it was up on the Gunflint Trail where snow manages to fall 10 months of the year. We spent the night at the Nor’Wester Lodge, and in the morning the ground was covered with two inches of wet, heavy, dripping snow. Here in the parking lot of Camp Road 20 it is cold (40 degrees) and the wind is not pleasant, but at least we are close enough to Lake Superior so that what fell from the heavens overnight was rain. The sun is still below the trees, but with the sky a pasty blue we have hopes it will warm up."
