"Initially dubbed Bois Brule State Park in 1957, the name changed to Judge C.R. Magney State Park in 1963, in honor of Judge Clarence Magney.

In addition to holding title as a lawyer and mayor of Duluth, Mr. Magney was a strong advocate of the state’s park system and was very influential in the establishment of state parks and waysides along the North Shore."
