Lake Superior Pebble Beach

Lake Superior Pebble Beach Professional Review and Guide

"A hike for the whole family that follows a long and wide stretch of Lake Superior shoreline. The Pebble Beach Hike, also called the Lake Walk, follows the Superior Hiking Trail for what must be its easiest and gentlest section; the shoreline trail follows the points and crescent-shaped bays of the lake. The beach at Park Point in Duluth has ample sand; this beach has plenty of flat pebbles.

One of the most popular sports among the Pebble Beach hikers is the fine art of skipping stones. The flatter stones here are certainly capable of a dozen skips. For amateur mineralogists or those who just want to know what they are throwing, the assortment of rocks includes red felsite, gray basalt, granite, jasper, and the occasional agate that got washed in from Isle Royale or Canada. Special attractions: The wind and waves of Lake Superior, beach-combing, and skipping stones."

I did this section of the Lake Superior trail as part of a week long backpacking trip. Carrying a backpack and walking in the loose rock was very tiring, especially for my kids. There are camping spots and picnic areas along this area, but not much for facilities. The view of the lake was great as well as wading in the water. If you are doing this as part of a backpacking trip, plan extra time. although it is flat travel is slow do to the loose rock.
