Cascade River

Cascade River Professional Review and Guide

"If it’s a good workout you’re looking for along with picturesque views of a tumbling whitewater river, climb the trail that follows the Cascade River inland from the North Shore. For spectacular views of Lake Superior, side hikes extend outside the park to Moose and Lookout Mountains, both of which rise 600 feet above the lake. Along the hike, the trail ventures close to the riverbank for views of waterfalls and then away from the river where the Cascade’s rushing water can be heard far below.

The hiking trail climbs more than 600 feet upstream along the west side, crosses over on a county road, and then journeys back down the east side. Portions of the trail are steep, and other portions cross wet areas on log bridges or boardwalks, so protective footwear is a must. This is a strenuous hike along a narrow, volcanic canyon that carries a rapidly moving river to Lake Superior, but it’s well worth the effort."

I have done this hike many times over the years and I am amazed at how I forget each time how grueling it can be. Part of the attraction is just that, it winds and climbs and descends and has some dangerous points where if you were to lose your footing it could be catastrophic. All the while being a clear and well maintained trail. I would love to find more trails like this so if anyone knows this trail and others like it please share.

This trail is great if you are looking for a little adventure. It do not recommend for beginning hikers but it is well worth the time and effort. At some places along the trail in the summer there are wild blueberry patches, it's a great hike to take a family on if they have done any hiking before.
