Stuart River to Iron Lake Loop

Stuart River to Iron Lake Loop Professional Review and Guide

"Portage north from the Echo Trail to the headwaters of the Stuart River and paddle downriver through an isolated and pristine region to Stuart Lake. Continue northeast through a series of lakes to huge Iron Lake. Base camp on this lake and enjoy two waterfalls and the fishing for an extended period; then turn back south and return by a loop through small lakes. Eventually the trip leads back to the Stuart River and the put-in point.

Moose and deer are found along the river. Fishing for walleye, bass, and northern pike can be good. Even when water levels are high, this is a rugged route. Do not even attempt this trip during the dry season. Consult with the Forest Service before starting."

This trip is best done in the spring after ice out (when the water is high) or in the fall when there isnt as many bugs. if you like to see wildlife and not many people but dont mind working a little this trip is for you. the first portage is a a bit on the longer side but after that it is short pull over portages and paddling through the winding stuart river. many moose in this area so keep an eye out for them they like to hide in the tall grass on the sides or the river.
