Duluth and Vicinity

Duluth and Vicinity Professional Review and Guide

"Positioned at the head of Lake Superior, Duluth has always been an important stopover along the routes passing through the Minnesota territory. Explorers who first sought the North American interior were led here by the course of the St. Lawrence River. In seeking the headwaters of Lake Superior and Minnesota’s St. Louis River—the headwater of the Great Lakes themselves—they found an important portage route across the short divide into the Mississippi drainage, today marked by Savanna Portage State Park, north of the town of McGregor.

Although Duluth is a bustling international seaport, the western terminus of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the city’s parks, backyards, harbor backwaters, sand bars, and mud flats attract long lists of interesting birds in spring and fall migration, and Lake Superior, whose sheer size resists freezing, attracts gulls and other rare water birds long into winter. And what birder hasn’t heard of Duluth’s famous Hawk Ridge? Thanks to the very proactive Duluth Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (and like-minded civic leaders), Duluth has become a wonderful tourist destination."

Been here multiple times. This harbor is extremely cool. The busiest one on all 5 great lakes. Lots of stuff to do and watch.
