Beaver Creek Valley State Park Professional Review and Guide

"West of Caledonia. A quick hike up the switchbacks of a bluff overlooking Beaver Creek valley. Special attractions: overlooks, birding, trout fishing, Big Spring, and Schech's Mill nearby."

"Beaver Creek, a tributary of the South Fork River in southeastern Minnesota, has been called one of the most beautiful spring brooks in the state’s southeastern section. Beginning in large springs and owing through extensive watercress beds, this stream lies in one of two major trout areas in the state, the other being the North Shore of Lake Superior. Beaver Creek is one of many rivers and creeks cutting their way through forested valleys and deep gorges where wildlife is prolific.

The area’s beauty, with its many hills and hollows, is much akin to parts of the Appalachians or Ozarks of the South. Cold water and a shaded creek valley make this hike a cool oasis on a hot summer day. And fall is an exceptional time to see spectacular color throughout the park. Most of the park’s 8 miles of hiking trails follow the creek, periodically making loops that take you away from the water and up the adjacent bluffs."

Gorgeous area. The campsites at this park are a little close together, but the cart-in sites are quite nice (especially 43!) We loved the area and made a long scenic hike, but ultimately left our campsite early because we and the dog had gotten so many wood ticks. In all my travels I have never encountered that many ticks- ugh! I can't wait to go back in the fall or winter when the poison ivy and the ticks are not so bountiful.

Wow! This one is worth the drive. Peaceful, beautiful, solitude. We did an out and back 7 mile run. You cross back and forth over the stream on bridges and logs. Terrain is even enough for maintaining a good clip while running and taking in the views. Look out for the deer and elk....there are prints everywhere. You want hills....take a side trail and be ready. Max out the VO2 and the thighs are burning. Serious runners or hikers.....this one is worth it.

The Bluff lands of Southeast MN/Southwest WI are a gorgeous area but they are fairly limited with hiking opportunities (although there are plenty of places to canoe or kayak). I lived and worked in this region for a year and always appreciated finding a new place to hike. Caledonia is one of the oldest towns in Minnesota and it is a neat, historical area to visit. Nearby Beaver Creek Valley is a beautiful park with decent fishing. I only found myself wishing it was a little bigger. This particular trail is a quick summit of a moderate size bluff with decent views of the nearby farms and wooded hillsides. The trail is well maintained although it can be a little wet times. If you are in the area consider a drive up the Root River Vally through Houston, Lanesboro and Preston. There is state land here and some good recreational opportunities.
