Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

    Tom Watson
"This is a “twofer” hiking option. Two regional parks, both called Coon Rapids Dam, are situated on each side of the namesake dam on the Mississippi River. The park on the west bank is in Hennepin County and operated by the Three Rivers Park District, while the one on the east bank is an Anoka County regional park. The two Coon Rapids Dam Regional Parks offer several miles of trails through lowland/floodplain flora and fauna along the Mississippi’s banks. For this hike, we begin on the west bank, or Hennepin County side; the trail follows the main channel and backwaters of the Mississippi along its course. Crossing the dam can add up to 6 more miles to your hike if you combine the woodland/river northern trail section and the more developed trail section south of the visitor center. Together, these two trail networks provide nearly 10 miles of hiking opportunities." Read more
