Mississippi River-Lake Itasca to Bemidji

Mississippi River-Lake Itasca to Bemidji Professional Review and Guide

"The uppermost stretch of the Mississippi is narrow, winding, and wooded with a few easy rapids to negotiate and beaver dams to pull over. Itasca is an attractive (albeit small) lake to canoe, not only for its geographical and historical appeal but also because the surrounding park is undeniably one of the state’s finest. Be sure to drive the Wilderness Loop and visit Douglas Lodge, a stately log building.

Nearing Bemidji, the Mississippi is joined by the Schoolcraft River from the south. Though usually runnable only in spring, the Schoolcraft is recommended for its wild, densely forested valley. The river has no difficult rapids."
