Avon Loop

Avon Loop Professional Review and Guide

"As one of the largest outstate towns in Minnesota, St. Cloud sits on the Mississippi amid scenic countryside 75 miles from the Twin Cities. The town founder named St. Cloud after the hometown of Napoleon Bonaparte.

The surrounding area contains large deposits of granite and many quarries, which gave St. Cloud the nickname of the Granite City. With three colleges contributing to St. Cloud's culture, as well as plenty of motels and restaurants, the city makes an excellent base for exploring the roads of Stearns County. If people stare at you as you pass through town, it's probably because of the wide smile on your face after an awesome ride."

25 miles - 2.5 hours: I enjoyed my first time doing a portion of this trail. Mostly flat, quiet, lakes, bridges, great scenery. I started in avon through Albany to Freeport. from Albany to Freeport was just off the freeway so i'll start in St. joes next time and go to albany - i'm hoping it will be less freeway - Dianne

I gave this a 4 only because it was the first trail I rode and not much to compare it too. I did enjoy the ride, though I started at the Columbia Gear parking lot just outside of town because there was construction in-town and I was riding a recumbent bike that isn't good with bumps, etc. The loop took about 1 hour 51 minutes. The sun was shining and the scenery was quite nice; farms, fields, lakes, etc. There were a few strenuous hills to climb, especially in the last section. However, after the arduous climb you are rewared with a long decent that makes you feel like your flying. A small section of CR 9 didn't have a shoulder but this section didn't last too long. Over all, a very fun and enjoyable ride. I would recommend it.

This is part of the terrific Lake Wobegone trail. The whole trail is wonderful, it is part of a rail bed system. Few hills, mostly flatland. But you go past trees, lakes, fields. It is beautiful.
